Are you a designer, design student, or considering a career in fashion? Do you love Halloween? If so, our Halloween collection is here to help you get ready for the spooky season. Award-winning apparel developer, Jamie Makani Aldaya, shares industry best practices in these smaller versions of the Basic books.
It's almost Halloween, and these workbooks are the perfect gift for fashion designers, patternmakers, developers, illustrators, fashion students, and homemakers. If you think you want a career in fashion, this is the perfect book to start your portfolio and confidently present to the department heads. I have an amazing fashion career, and you can too! Aloha!
These books familiarize the reader with the very start of a collection: concepting and the brief. Typically, designers journal and sketch separately because you almost never find body templates, let alone templates combined with room for journaling. To pull a concept together, a designer gathered many resources to create a HUGE mood board. And all body templates, known as croquis (CROW-kee), were hand-drawn; this was a daunting challenge for anyone who was art-challenged, "not a creative", or felt uncomfortable drawing the perfect body. Think of how many amazing ideas never came to fruition because of creative fear?
Each section of these workbooks handles a part of the concepting process, from setting up a design calendar so you get used to knowing when to start, to getting down and dirty by going shopping, well Market Shopping, and checking out your competition, doing some research on current and upcoming trends to pull together on your inspiration pages. THEN you can start sketching looks on prepared croquis. When your sketches are done, you'll recap your design details and enter comments from any meetings you have.
After all sections are complete, you will wrap up the collection by jotting down notes of thanks on the Mahalo pages, entering your thoughts of gratitude on the oli lines of the dancer, freeing them to the universe, for it to send you good intentions in return. The books are laid out to highlight single and double-page sketches, where you can use the full 17" width of the book. At only 150 pages, the books easily open to lay flat to tell your stories.
Each page uses a dot matrix vs. lined graph paper to help you stay organized with your thoughts without being contained by a grid, and the entire book is printed at 20% black ink opacity so you can design easily on top of the croquis, which will "fade" behind your sketches. Use the vibrant colors of the islands to bring paradise to fashion and your aloha to bring your fashion to life.
Each book contains a quarterly calendar with seasonal reference to retail selling, general raw material and garment production leadtimes, general shipping transit leadtimes, a color key to help prioritize dates, and an embellishment layering guide to help you design those extra special details that makes garments sell! It also includes 4 Market Shopping pages with mini-sketch areas to note special details used by your competition, and other important information like stores that carry the product you want to design, your competitor's price points, trends they cover, etc. Finally, there is a double-spread Inspiration section (a full 11x17 in area) for you to note trends you feel are important, colors you believe in, what you think your competition is lacking, who your customer is, and what is important to him or her. This is about you and who you want your customer to be.
